Atletico Madrid qualify for the Knock-Out round

The Group B drama has finally ended as Atletico Madrid secured their place in the knock-out stage. They were in 3rd place before the match against FC Porto. So it was a must-win game for the Simeone boys to qualify for the knock-out round. Last night, they beat FC Porto by a 3-1 margin at Estadio do Drago.

The match between Atletico Madrid and FC Porto was quite tempering as three players were shown red cards. In the 67th minute, Atletico Madrid wing-back Yannick Carrasco got a red card. Within eight minutes, two Porto players also got red cards.

Atletico Madrid traveled to Estadio do Drago to play a very crucial match against the Portuguese side, FC Porto. It was a must-win match for both teams to go to the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Diego Simeone, manager of Atletico Madrid, set the team formation with 3-4-2-1. He used three center-backs along with two wing-backs. On the other side, Porto manager Sergio Conceicao played his team with 4-4-2 formation.

Both sides have played very aggressive football from the starting of the match. FC Porto have a massive crowd as they played in their home ground. But the home team could concede the first goal in just three minutes if Antoine Griezmann didn’t miss the chance.

However, the Portuguese side created many chances in the first half but could not find the net because of the heroic saves of Jan Oblak. As a result, the first half ended in 0-0.

Atletico Madrid became more aggressive and more attacking in the second half. They were looking for goals desperately. In the 56th minute, Antoine Griezmann scored the first goal for the Spanish side. It was a great ball from the corner kick, and Griezmann made no mistake to score.

Conceding the goal at the home ground, FC Porto lost their temperature in the game. As a result, Wendell and Agustin Marchesin were sent off at 70th and 75th minutes. Atletico Madrid wing-back Yannick Carrasco also got a red card.

The Simeone boys became more attacking over the nine-man team FC Porto. They scored two more goals between 90 to 92 minutes. In the 90th minute, Angel Correa scored from the pass of Griezmann. Two minutes later, Rodrigo de Paul hit the third one for Atletico Madrid. Anyway, the Portuguese side returned a goal from the penalty kick, but it was not enough to win the game. As a result, Atletico Madrid qualified for the knock-out round of the UEFA Champions League.
