Dean Elgar, the captain of South Africa, won the toss at Old Trafford and opted to bat first. So, he started the innings with Sarel Erwee. But both openers failed to get a good start as Sarel Erwee lost his wicket to James Anderson in the 4th over.

After that, the skipper tried to build a partnership with the new batter, Keegan Petersen. They looked comfortable on the pitch as both batters kept scoring runs. But English pacer Stuart Broad didn’t let them make a big partnership. He picked up Dean Elgar in the 13th over.
