England have a good chance to come back in the series against South Africa. After losing the first match of the three-match test series, the home team are in the driving in the 2nd match. They picked up all the wickets of the Proteas after Day 1.
1st Innings of South Africa
Dean Elgar, the captain of South Africa, won the toss at Old Trafford and opted to bat first. So, he started the innings with Sarel Erwee. But both openers failed to get a good start as Sarel Erwee lost his wicket to James Anderson in the 4th over.
After that, the skipper tried to build a partnership with the new batter, Keegan Petersen. They looked comfortable on the pitch as both batters kept scoring runs. But English pacer Stuart Broad didn’t let them make a big partnership. He picked up Dean Elgar in the 13th over. However, the Proteas then continuously lost wickets due to the aggression of the English pacers. Kagiso Rabada scored the highest 36 runs for South Africa. On the other hand, James Anderson and Stuart Broad took three wickets each. As a result, South Africa lost all their wickets in 151 runs on Day 1.
1st Innings of England
The home team also failed to get a good start. England lost their first wicket in the 2nd over as opener Alex Lees departed the pitch after scoring only four runs. However, Zak Crawley then tried to tackle the situation with the new player, Ollie Pope. But they couldn’t go far as their partnership broke in the 11th over. Ollie Pope lost his wicket to Anrich Nortje after scoring 23 runs.
Joe Root, the following batsman, also failed to contribute much. Protea pacer Kagiso Rabada took his wicket early. Jonny Bairstow then came into the pitch and speeded up the run-scoring. As of now, he made a partnership of 68 runs with the opener Zak Crawley. Both batsmen remained not out and they will start batting today. England are just 40 runs behind the Proteas after Day 1.
