Current Copa Del Rey holder FC Barcelona got eliminated from this tournament, losing the match against Athletic Club. Last night, the Los Leones beat the current champion by 3-2. As a result, Barcelona have ended their journey in the tournament from the Round of 16. On the other side, their biggest rival, Real Madrid, qualified for the next round after winning the match against Elche.

Match Report

Last night, Athletic Club welcomed FC Barcelona at San Mames Barria. The match was very crucial for Barca. Because they already have been knocked out from the UEFA Champions League. Moreover, the Catalan Club are also having a tough time in the league. They are standing on the 6th at the point table.

However, last night Barca boss Xavi Hernandez set up the team formation with 4-3-3 against Athletic Club. He used Ferran Torres with Jutgla and Ezzalzouli in the front. On the other side, the home team manager played his team in a 4-4-2 formation.

Anyway, the home team took the lead at the beginning of the match. Bilbao midfielder Iker Muniain scored the goal in just two minutes with the help of N. Williams. Scoring the goal, Athletic Club became more aggressive.  They created more chances than Barcelona in the first half. But the visitors became stable after a while. They equalized in the 20th minute as well. Ferran Torres, who joined Barcelona from Manchester City, scored that goal for Barca. Both teams couldn’t score more in the first half. As a result, the first part ended in a 1-1 draw.

Returning from the break, both teams tried desperately to take the lead. Though Barca had more possession on the ball, the home team created more chances. Athletic Club took 19 shots throughout the match, whereas Barca took only 7.

The home team finally found the net at the very last moment. Defender Inigo Martinez scored that goal in the 86th minute. But the visitors equalized again just before the full-time. Spanish young lad Pedri scored that goal in the 93rd minute for Barca. So the match went to the extra time.

However, the home team broke the tie in the extra time. Bilbao skipper Iker Muniain scored the winning goal from the penalty kick in the 106th minute. As a result, Athletic Club won the match, and FC Barcelona got eliminated from this tournament.
