Liverpool have won their first trophy of the season as they defeated Manchester City in the Community Shield final. Last night, they faced the current league holder, Man City, at the King Power Stadium, where Alexander Arnold, Mo Salah, and Darwin Nunez scored all three goals for Liverpool to win this match. On Man City’s side, their new signing Julian Alvarez scored the only goal for the Citizens.
In the final of the Community Shield, Liverpool’s boss played his team in a 4-3-3 formation. He played Adrian between the goal-post as Alisson missed the match due to injury. The manager also deployed Roberto Firmino in the front with Mo Salah and Luis Diaz. Besides, Pep Guardiola also set up his team formation with 4-3-3. In the front, Guardiola deployed his new recruit, Erling Haaland.
However, both teams played very aggressively from the start of the match. But Liverpool dominated in the first 20 minutes. As a result, they didn’t take much time to take the lead. Liverpool’s right-back Trent Alexander Arnold scored a brilliant goal with a curl shoot in the 21st minute. Mohammad Salah assisted in this goal. After that, Man City tried hard but failed to score in the first half. Thus, Liverpool led 1-0 at halftime.
Returning from the break, Man City became desperate to find the equalizer. In the 58th minute, Pep Guardiola replaced Riyad Mahrez with Julian Alvarez. And guess what? The Argentine found the equalizer in the 70th minute. It seemed the match would go to the penalty shoot-out. But City captain Ruben Dias made a crucial mistake in the 80th minute. He made a handball inside the box. So, the match referee offered a penalty kick to Liverpool after checking the VAR.
Mohammad Salah took the shot and didn’t make any mistakes. As a result, Liverpool took the lead again in the 83rd minute. Furthermore, Liverpool scored again in injury time as Darwin Nunez found the net with a brilliant header. However, Man City couldn’t score more in the remaining minutes. So, Liverpool won the match and got the first trophy of the season.
