One of the strongest and most competitive teams in the English Premier League is Manchester City. Due to their strong financial condition, Manchester City have signed the world’s best players. But the club is accused of breaking league rules by not being honest about their financial situation. The Premier League has investigated the alleged breaches from 2009 to 2018.

Statement from Premier League

Today, The Premier League has released a statement explaining Man City’s alleged breaches. They stated, “In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club (Club) to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4.”

“Commissions are independent of the Premier League and member clubs. The members of the Commission will be appointed by the independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel, in accordance with Premier League Rules W.19, W.20 and W.26,” The PL stated. “The Premier League will be making no further comment in respect of this matter until further notice.”

What Punishment could Man City face?

In the past, The UEFA charged Man City for breaking the rules. However, the charge was overturned after their appeal. But this time, Manchester City could face serious punishment. Here are all the punishments the PL can impose:

  • Suspend a club from playing league matches
  • Points deductions
  • Recommend to the board that league matches be replayed
  • Recommend to the board that the league expels the respondent club
  • Order compensation
  • Cancel or refuse registration of players
  • Conditional punishment
  • Order the club to pay the costs
  • Make such other order as it thinks fit

Manchester City’s response

Manchester City have published a statement in response to the allegations. They became surprised by this news. On their official website, Manchester City stated, “Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.”

However, they welcome the PL to review the issue. “The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position. As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
