Southampton stunned Chelsea at St. Mary’s Ground

Chelsea FC are having a tough time in the Premier League. Their performance away from home is not going well. Last night, Southampton FC defeated the Blues by a 2-1 margin at the St. Mary’s Stadium. As a result, Chelsea FC have suffered two successive away defeats in the English Premier League. Moreover, the defeat sees Chelsea in 8th place in the point table.

Last night, Southampton FC welcomed Chelsea at the St. Mary’s Stadium. Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel set up the team formation with 4-2-2-2. Unfortunately, he missed the service of Reece James as the player was injured. So, the manager replaced him with Cesar Azpilcueta. On the other side, the Saint manager played his team in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Chelsea tried to take the lead early in the match. So, they start pressing from the start of the game. As a result, Chelsea FC didn’t have to wait much to take the lead as Raheem Sterling found the net in the 23rd minute. Eventually, the home team became stable, and took only three minutes to get the equalizer. Saint midfielder Romeo Lavia scored that goal in the 26th minute for the team.

After that, both teams created some crucial chances in the first half. But Southampton FC were the only successful side to score a goal. Saint’s number nine Adam Armstrong beat Eduardo Mendy to score a stunning goal just before the first half. He got that goal in the 45+1 minute with the help of R. Perraud. 

After the interval, Chelsea tried hard to level the scoreline. But Southampton FC defended extremely well. Despite Chelsea’s hard work, the Blues couldn’t score more in the second half. As a result, Southampton FC sealed the victory at their home, and now standing in 7th place.

Azpilicueta’s Reactions

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta talked after the match. While speaking to the media, he said, “It is very clear that it is not a good start.This is a reflection of the inconsistency in the games where we had good spells, but we were not able to get something. Some games we played well and others not so well. We need to find the consistency to keep winning games. That is what will take us higher in the table where we want to be.”
