The Lord’s Test: England beat New Zealand

The first test of the three-match series between England and New Zealand ended in four days. England, the home team, defeated the Kiwis at the Lord’s Cricket Ground by five wickets. Joe Root, the English batsman, became the Player of the Match because of his brilliant batting. However, there are two matches remaining in this series. England will seal the series if they can you any of the remaining two.

Match Report

Like the first innings, the visiting team couldn’t have a decent start in the second innings. Literally, the bowlers from both sides dominated the entire test. In the 2nd innings, New Zealand lost their first wicket very early. Will Young departed the pitch in the second over as James Anderson picked up his wicket.

Tom Latham, the other opener, then tried to build a partnership with the skipper, Kane Williamson. The pitch was very difficult to batting. So, both players played very carefully against the English pacers. But they couldn’t go far as Matty Potts took the wicket of Kane Williamson. Matty Potts was on fire in the second innings of New Zealand. He got another wicket in the 14th over. This time opener Tom Latham had to go back to the pavilion.

However, Daryl Mitchel and Tom Blundell scored impressively as New Zealand handled the situation. Both players were playing brilliantly. As a result, they got the half-centuries in this match. Daryl Mitchel scored the highest 108 runs for the team before he lost the wicket. But Tom Blundell wasn’t lucky enough to pick up the century. He departed the pitch after scoring 96 runs. Anyway, the remaining batters couldn’t contribute much. As a result, New Zealand ended their second innings in 285 runs and set a target of 277 runs for the home team.

Chasing the target, England lost three wickets in a very short time. It looked like New Zealand could win the game. Kiwi bowler Kyle Jamieson got four wickets in this innings. But Joe Root and Ben Stokes were very solid on the pitch. Root scored the highest 115 runs, and Stokes got a half-century to chase the target. Both players remained not out in this match, which earned the victory for England.
